I love the season of Thanksgiving. In fact, it’s really a shame that there is only one day formally set aside and designated officially as “Thanksgiving” day. This week as our nation celebrates Thanksgiving Day and we gather with our families to feast and say thanks, “Pastor’s Gratitude Journal” offers prayers of thanksgiving for our extended family that is our Good Shepherd family of faith.
What a blessing it was this past Sunday to realize that our congregation has the full representation of family across the entire lifespan—just like at our own family celebrations we see babies on up to seasoned citizens. It was such a moving experience to see our youngest members honor Mr. Earl, our oldest member, by presenting him with the quilt that the youth in our Sewing Seeds of Love sewing ministry created for him.
What a blessing it was to see a packed house of worshipers come forward on Sunday to place “blessing leaves” on our Thanksgiving tree.
What a blessing it was to be visited by Ms. Debra Joseph, Moderator of the New Orleans Association of the United Church of Christ and hear her bring us greetings from the NOA Executive Board and from our sister churches in the NOA. It was a testament to the reality of extended church family who send us love and prayers even when they can’t be with us in person, not unlike our own extended families do this time of the year with holiday greeting cards.
My brothers and sisters, count your blessings and offer them up as thanksgiving to the Lord and have a most blessed and happy Thanksgiving Holiday!
