This week, I’m offering thanksgiving for the multitude of ways Good Shepherd serves the Body of Christ through the multitude of people who make up Good Shepherd. If you were with us at our August 30th worship, you know that the morning was spent hearing from a dozen or so different members of our congregation who spoke to what it means to be a part of Christian service.
After worship, I had chance to chat with Bob Volk at the potluck lunch. I was commenting to him about how, although he was not one of our speakers that morning, his name was invoked several times by other speakers because of the work he does for our church. Bob was mentioned as a Sunday school teacher, a choir member, a member of the building maintenance team and even a trusty assistant to our Women’s Guild.
I joked with Bob that I was going to begin calling him Guido Merkens. Saints fans will remember Guido Merkens as a utility player with the Saints in the 1980s. In sports, the term utility player refers to someone who can play multiple positions with skill and competence. Guido played running back, wide receiver, punter and defensive back. His value to the team came not because he was a star at one position, but because he took on whatever job needed to be done and gave it his all.
That’s Bob! In fact, that’s Good Shepherd! And Bob exemplifies Good Shepherd. We are a part of the Body of Christ that excels by serving where we can, when we can, as best we can. Does a job need to be done? Does a mission or a ministry need to be started? Good Shepherd finds a way to make it happen!
I am thankful for every single member who shared words about their mission and ministry work through Good Shepherd at our Fifth Sunday Celebration in August and I am also thankful for those who listened and heard the Holy Spirit speaking through our members’ talks and have been inspired to step up and step in to new and exciting challenges at our church.
Please join me in offering prayers of gratitude for each speaker and ministry:
Mel Aucoin (Building and Maintenance); Sheila Fussell (Sewing Ministry); Sandy Graci (40th Anniversary Committee); Renee Graf (Christian Education); Thais Lacrouts (Women’s Guild); June LeGuluche (Crafts Class); Jordy Luft (Music Ministry); Joan Lyles (Food Ministry); David Mains (Denominational Missions); Don Peters (Adult Christian Education); and Sharon Wetzel (Council and Worship Committee).
And please join me in offering prayers of thanksgiving for all who serve the Body of Christ through Good Shepherd. As we heard in our Scripture reading on Sunday, August 30: “If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:11, NIV)
Soli Deo Gloria!
