All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing,
This week, "Pastor’s Gratitude Journal" is offering prayers of thanksgiving for God’s gift of pets!
One of my most favorite months of the year is October, in part because of the mild weather that we often enjoy, but also because it marks the feast day set aside to celebrate and commemorate one of my favorite saints. The official feast day of St. Francis of Assisi is October 4th, the very day I'm penning this journal entry.
Francis was an Italian friar and preacher who lived almost 1,000 years ago. Francis was an avid lover of animals and tradition holds that after reading Mark 16:15 where Jesus declares "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature," Francis believed it was his duty to do so even to the animals! While animals of the wild typically flee from the presence of humans, history tells us that when Francis would go into the forests and woods to proclaim the Good News to every creature, amazingly, animals would actually flock to Francis!
This coming Saturday, October 10, we’ll remember St. Francis as we hold our annual Blessing of the Animals in our parking lot at 10:30 AM. This event is open to the public and is always an exciting and wonderful display of God’s amazing creatures who are our animal friends! So, bring your dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, snakes, spiders, hermit crabs, turtles and any other pet to our Blessing of the Animals and join me in offering prayers of thanksgiving for God’s gift of pets!
